Tips

Three weeks holiday? Uruguay offers plenty of opportunities to have a varied stay. Culture combined with a relaxing stay at the beach.

You're arriving via Buenos Aires? (often, these plane tickets are cheaper!)

Day 1: Recover from the flight by enjoying tango and more music in the capital city of Argentinia.

Day 2: Take the boat to the other side of the river, getting you to Uruguay. You will arrive in a buetilful little city: Colonia del Sacramento.  city that was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Day 3: Enjoy the city some more and recover from a possible jetlag.

Day 4: Take the bus to Montevideo. Book a hostel or a cheap hotel.

Day 5: Visit the old part of the city Montevideo, eat in the harbour or, even better, a less touristic site but evenso very tasteful, choose a good restaurant in the streets of San Jose. Or visit the attractive site of Pocitos, with many colonial buildings. Have some lunch and, if the weather allows it, enjoy the beach situated right next to Pocitos. On sundays in Montevideo, don't forget to visit the second-hand market Tristan Navaja.

Day 6: Take the bus to La Pedrera. Rent a house in this cosy city at the sea, or book a hotel.

Day 7: Enjoy the beach some more!

Day 8: Take the bus to Barra de Valizas. You can rent houses here (ofcourse, we rent houses there), or camp. There is a hostel, with sleep-dorms only.

Day 9: Another nice day to relax at the beach.

Day 10: Time for some action: Walk to Cabo Polonio. A beautiful trip! Right along the coast or through dunes, take your pick. You can get back with an open jeep to the bus towards Barra de Valizas.

Day 11: A day at the beach, fishing ot swimming in the Lagune or visit the Bosque de Ombues: Impressive nature with all kinds of birds and diverse trees.

Day 12: You can rent a car and spend a day driving through the palmpampa's. We have a route for you. You will drive past a lagune, you'll see many gaucho's no doubt and you'll enjoy the beatiful sight of the palmpampa's!

Day 13: Time for another relaxing day at the beach of Barra de Valizas.

Day 14: Taking the car, you can go to Fortalezza de Santa Tereza. An old Spanish fort with a small museum. Driving back, you can visit the nature.

Day 15: Time to enjoy the local surroundings: Ofcourse there is the beach, there probably is live music in one of the bars. For kids, there are often circus and acrobatic acts performed by the local 'hippies'.

Day 16: Why not walk along the beach to Aguas Dulces? This is a walk of about 2 hours taking you to this small beach village. It's somewhat more authentic than Valizas and surely worth a visit. Taking the bus will get you back to Valizas.

Day 17: When you've got some energy left over, do take the bus towards Punta del Diablo. Also a well-known beach village in Uruguay, originally a fishermen's village. Here, yuo can also rent a house or book a hostel.

Day 19/20: The travel back to Montevideo or Buenos Aires. Make sure you arrive there 1 day before your plane leaves. Travelling from Punta del Diablo will take a full day. Traveling back to Buenos Aires will take you two days (1 day travelling with the bus to Colonia stay there for the night, the next day tae the boat to Buenos Aires)
